As your City Councillor I pride myself on being open and accessible to help you at City Hall.

Priorities for Coquitlam

My Platform

Matt is focused on the issues that matter most to Coquitlam residents.

Building the Infrastructure We Need

Coquitlam is growing, and with that growth comes the need for new schools, hospitals, and transit investment.

We’ll continue to push the Provincial and Federal Governments when it comes to:

  • Expanding Eagle Ridge Hospital
  • Building and expanding schools
  • Finally fixing the Brunette Interchange.

New Pools and Rec Centres

Swimming isn’t just fun; it’s a life skill.

While other cities are struggling to keep their outdoor pools open we’ve built and opened new pools and plan to build more:

  • Opened the new Mundy Park Pool which will serve Coquitlam families for another 60 years.
  • Partnered with the YMCA to bring a pool to Burquitlam.
  • Breaking ground on the new Burke Mountain Community Centre this spring which will provide a new 6 lane 25 meter lap pool and recreation pool.
  • Planning for a new Fraser Mills pool to take pressure off Poirier.

Valuing the Basics

I’m a big believer in getting the basics right. I’ll continue to ensure we make roadwork, snow removal, fire service, and garbage pick up reliable while keeping Coquitlam taxes below the Metro Vancouver average.

Roads and Buses So You Can Get Where You Need To Be

As our community grows, we need more options for drivers and transit users.

I am committed to planning and advocating for:

  • People need more bus stops so they aren’t walking long distances to catch the bus and we need more frequent service throughout the city that will connect people to SkyTrain.
  • We’ll look for opportunities to expand roads like we did on Pipeline to help the flow of traffic.
  • Plan for future roads and more pedestrian overpasses in the City Centre core so you can get to where you need to be faster.

Housing Families Can Fit In

Too often couples and young families are ending up in condos that don’t meet their needs.

In response Coquitlam has introduced policies to:

  • Mandate bedroom sizes.
  • Require 40% 2 and 3 bedroom units.
  • Increased requirements for below market units to be 25% below average rents.

More Library Branches

As a former Library Board Trustee for ten years I have seen firsthand the incredible services they offer for kids, parents, immigrants, and local businesses.

Over the last few years and in the future we have approved:

  • Construction of a third branch on Burke Mountain
  • Plans for a fourth branch in Burquitlam
  • A new and bigger Library Link/Book Bus

Pairing Mental Health Nurses With Police

Coquitlam is one of the few communities to have paired mental health nurses with RCMP officers.

These dedicated units have had a tremendous success deescalating situations and helping people connect with the mental health supports they need.

Keeping Our Community Safe

We’ve made significant investments into Coquitlam’s RCMP detachment and Coquitlam Fire.

  • With more officers we’ve started a Gang Enforcement Task Force
  • Put more officers on the road to catch speeding
  • New smaller medic trucks for Coquitlam Fire allowing for smaller medic responses and keeping large trucks free to combat major incidents.

Supporting Seniors

Coquitlam has provided two parcels of land for non-profit operator SUCCESS to build subsidized seniors’ housing. I’ll continue to advocate so seniors in Coquitlam can stay in the community they call home.

We’ll continue to support Glen Pine and Dogwood Pavilion as homes away from home for so many seniors. These community centres offer so much to our city as places to socialize, have fun, and stay connected.

Investing in Sports

Growing up playing as a hockey goalie taught me a lot of valuable life lessons. Sports are fundamental to raising healthy, confident, connected kids. Here in Coquitlam, they’re something families, coaches, and volunteers take part in together – showing up, cheering hard, and building community with every game.

As Coquitlam grows I am committed to:

  • A new deal with Planet Ice that refreshes the facility and gives residents more access
  • Opening a new turf field on Burke Mountain and beginning plans for future turf fields
  • More options for outdoor and indoor pickleball

Expanding Our Parks

Coquitlam has some of the best parks in all of Metro Vancouver. But with a growing city we need to enhance what we have and provide more.

I’m committed to:

  • Approved the new Brunette Park.
  • New community gardens in City Centre and Maillardville with plans for more areas in the city.
  • A new dog park at Brookmere Park and enhancements to the dog park at Glen Park.
  • Expanding Cottonwood and Guilby Park.
  • Refreshing more of our parks with new playground equipment and spray parks.

Planting More Trees

Coquitlam’s forests and rivers aren’t just for recreation, they’re critical for our physical and mental health.

I’m committed to:

  • Plant thousands of new trees a year.
  • Require replanting for all new developments.
  • Ensuring diversity of tree species.

A Fun City

You shouldn’t have to leave Coquitlam to have fun with the family.

I’ll continue supporting options right here at home like:

  • Free summer concerts
  • Street mural program to add art to our streets
  • Enhancing Lights at La Farge
  • World Cup watch parties
  • The largest Canada Day celebration and firework show in Metro Vancouver

Jobs Close to Home

Coquitlam has tremendous opportunities to bring more jobs to our city, providing people with the option to work closer to home.

Development around our SkyTrain is now required to include more commercial and office space. We created an economic development strategy so we can proactively recruit businesses here, and are working with developers to build more industrial space.

Addressing Homelessness

Addressing homelessness will take a cross governmental approach.

We worked with the Kwikwetlem Nation, BC Housing, and the Province of BC to open a temporary winter shelter on the Riverview/Sumiqwuelu lands so homeless people would have a place to go at night and get connected with the supports they need.

We’ll continue to push the Province to add more health services to at 3030 Gordon and open new treatment facilities for those that need help the most.
